EDIT! Tidy Up and Lip-Sync

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

Monday 26th - Friday 30th

*Edit- look in your animators survival kit for definitions for work flows.*

Throughout this week I worked on tidying up my animation adding overlaps and arch's where necessary.

I have found I am struggling with my current work flow as my animation was feeling to stiff. and the subtle more still areas, where the character isn't meant to move much, I feel I have over animated to stop it feeling dead. I wanted these areas to be more still and I am un sure on how to get this working.

I have done some research through the week on work flow and lip sync.

Lip-Sync - From what I can gather from my research one of the best ways to approach lip-sync is much like the Pose to Pose* work flow. You start of by keying the biggest shapes/ the up and down. and then do another pass working on the in and out. This will give you the basic shapes for your lip-sync. You then do a third pass defining the shapes you need to make the sound.

and then animate the tongue.

One thing I did learn was you don't need to show every single letter as if you were to sound it out looking in the mirror. As people we are lazy and talk lazily and out mouth shapes actually tend to blend together a lot. I also never realized what a big part the tongue plays in how we make sound.

After applying what I learned about how the tongue is used to make sounds, to my animation it has made a huge improvement to the readability of my Lip-Sync.

Workflow - There are several kinds of work flow ranging from straight ahead, pose to pose, to sketch and layered. According to Sir Wade** on YouTube, there are 7 different kinds of work flow that he has identified and I was only aware of two. Each method seems to have its own use depending on the kind of shot you are creating so, once I finish Uni, I intend to experiment with each of them.

As I wasnt able to assertain from my research which of these workflows would benefit me most in an animation like MI6, I will be contacting Graham Goldsworthy*** on Monday and hopefully get some advice on the best kinds of work flow for more subtle acting.
